I often see sellers tell buyers to fill the empty perfume bottles with colored water. Every time I see this I shutter to think how many valuable collectible bottles have been ruined or will be ruined.
By filling the glass bottles with water, the bacteria in the water will cause mold and also will eventually cloud the glass. Once this is done the bottles can not be repaired.
To safely fill your Collectible Glass bottles:
First, mix rubbing Alcohol (3/4) to (1/4) Filtered water, this will make the fluid mixture. To color the mixture:use a small amount of food coloring and add this to a small amount of warm water. Then add this mixture to the Fluid Mixture. Please note that if you add the food coloring direct to the Fluid mixture, the food coloring will not mix, it will just make lots of colored bubbles and you will have to start over.
You can also fill the bottles gepletely with rubbing alcohol and no water. Just make sure to mix the food coloring with warm water , when adding color to your fluid.
The beautiful Factices and dummy bottles, etc. that you see on display in the stores have always used a alcohol based mix to prevent glass damage . NEVER COLORED WATER!!!
Do not fill your bottles all the way to the top, give room for the glass to expand..
This mixture can be used to fill all sizes of your perfume bottles.
I hope this helps all my fellow sellers and collectors.
