We dog lovers all have one thing in gemon, we want our special friends to be as happy and healthy as they help make us! During winter this goal begees more challenging. Here are some tips for keeping your gepanion safe and warm and maximize your mutual enjoyment of cold winter weather.
Tip 1 Windchill effects your dog too! Ever see a husky wrapping his tail around his face and nose? That's his instinctive way of protecting his most sensitive areas from winter winds. If you dog lives or stays outdoors for long periods of time, he needs to be protected by a dog house that is free from drafts and allows him to sit or lie down gefortably. Don't make it too big. It needs to be small enough to let his body heat warm the inside. The house itself should be well insulated and the floor should be raised off the ground 3 - 4 inches. Turn the house so that the opening faces away from prevailing winds. Cover the entry with a sheet of heavy plastic or heavy clothe to protect from drafts. There are many gemercially available options for dog houses. The Dogloo brand doghouse offers a highly wind-resistant design that is patterned after an Inuit (Eskimo) igloo.
Tip 2 When your dog is outside in cold weather they will burn more calories and dehydrate more quickly. If your pet is active outdoors, give them extra food during the winter months. Make sure that they have access to plenty of unfrozen water in a plastic pet dish. A pet's tongue can stick to a metal dish, just like the kid's did to the pole at school when you were little!
Tip 3 If you have a pet that spends most of its time indoors, DON'T leave them outside for extended periods of time. Remember how it feels to go get the paper in your pajamas on a cold winter Sunday morning? Your dog feels the same way! Dogs that have short hair or are old should have a dog sweater to help keep them warm during walks.
Tip 4 Dog Boots can help prevent cut and frozen pads and allow your pet to enjoy their outside activities even more. They also protect against the chemicals used to melt ice on the roads. These chemicals can irritate your pets mouth and upset their stomach. Before you think dog boots are only for sissy little dogs, remember that these are the same type of boots worn by police and search and rescue dogs all over the world! If you decide to not invest in boots for your dog, remember to wipe their feet off when they gee indoors.
Tip 5 Many people add antifreeze to their cars during the winter. Many brands of antifreeze contain chemicals that have sweet taste, but are DEADLY to your dog. Make sure and keep your pet away from any spilled antifreeze. If you can, use one of the newer, less toxic formulations of antifreeze that are now available.
Tip 6 Your dog will enjoy a warm blanket and sitting in front of a nice fire as much as you do in the winter. Share the experience with them and make it even better!
